As travelers in unknown lands,
we recognize one another
when unexpectedly we meet,
paths crossing here and there,
and though our lips say:
“Hello, how are you?”
our hearts answer:
“Are we still playing that game?”
and we smile, knowingly,
sharing a universal tone,
gazes that speak louder than words.
For a time, we speak the language
of birds, of crawly creatures,
of clouds, and of water,
until we take another breath
and pause. Smile.
And begin again conversing
in the language of heart.
“Hello, I’ve been waiting for you.”
